Sony patents eye-tracking controls that link eye shapes to computer actions
Sony describes a system that uses a camera to watch your eyes and the skin around them. It compares the current shape of your eyes to a saved list of specific movements, like blinking or looking in a certain direction, to trigger computer commands.
In the filing’s own words
An information processing apparatus includes a registration information acquisition unit that acquires registration information in which a motion determined from shapes of an eye and a periphery of the eye and processing are associated with each other, an image acquisition unit that acquires an image of the eye and the periphery of the eye, a processing selection unit that selects processing included in the registration information on the basis of the registration information and the image, and a control unit that performs control such that the processing selected by the processing selection unit is performed.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An information processing apparatus, comprising: central processing unit (CPU) configured to: acquire registration information that includes association of a first a motion with a processing, wherein the first motion is based on a shape of an eye and a periphery of the eye; acquire an image of each of the eye and the periphery of the eye; encode a state of the eye and the periphery of the eye for each frame of a plurality of frames of the acquired image; determine information of a second motion in the acquired image, based on the encoded state; calculate a matching degree between the first motion and the second motion; determine that the second motion in the acquired image corresponds to the first motion based on the matching degree; select the processing based on the determination that the second motion corresponds to the first motion; and execute the selected processing.
