Questions

How do I work out a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 20% of 150 is 0.2 × 150 = 30.

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Take the new number minus the old one, divide by the old one and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = a 25% increase.

Why is a 50% drop then a 50% rise not back to the start?

Because the second percentage is of a smaller number. 100 drops 50% to 50, and 50% of 50 is only 25, so you end at 75.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Change measures from a starting value (old to new). Difference compares two values with no starting point, using their average, so it is the same whichever way round you enter them.

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15% to 20% at a sit-down restaurant is usual, 18% to 20% for good service. Tap a tip button and the split shows what each person owes.
