Your Files Know Your Name: Remove Hidden Info Before You Share

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDFs and photos carry your name, company, editing time and even GPS location. Here's how to see it and remove it in seconds.

Magnifying glass revealing hidden glowing lines in a sheet of paper

Send someone a Word document and you may also be sending your full name, your employer, the folder path of the template you used, how many minutes you spent editing, and the names of everyone who left a comment. None of it shows on the page. It's all stored inside the file.

Our free Hidden Info Remover shows you what each file is hiding and gives you a clean copy, without uploading anything.

What's hiding in your files

Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Author and "last saved by", usually your full name
  • Company and manager
  • The template path, which often includes your computer user name
  • Total editing time, created, saved and printed dates
  • Names on comments and tracked changes
  • Photos inside the document that still carry GPS locations
  • In Excel, links to other files that reveal folder paths

PDFs

  • Author, title, subject and keywords
  • The apps used to make it, and when it was created and changed
  • A second hidden copy of those details (called XMP)
  • Names on comments, and sometimes attached files you never noticed

Photos

  • The GPS location where the photo was taken, often accurate to a few meters
  • The phone or camera model, sometimes its serial number, and the exact date and time

How to clean a file

  1. Open the Hidden Info Remover and drop in your files. It handles JPG, PNG and WebP photos, PDFs and Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
  2. Read what each file contains. Details are labeled Personal, Revealing or Minor.
  3. For PDFs, tick the extras if you want them, such as deleting comments or attached files.
  4. Press Remove hidden info. The tool checks each cleaned copy again and tells you if anything is left.
  5. Download the clean copies. Your originals are never changed.

What it won't remove for you

Tracked changes, comments, hidden text, hidden sheets and slides, and speaker notes are part of the document itself. Removing them safely means editing it, so the tool points them out and tells you where to fix them. In Word: Review → Accept All Changes, then Delete All Comments. Then drop the file in again to check.

The tool also never touches what's visible. Read the words and look at the pictures before you share.

A note about photos from your phone

When you pick a photo in a phone's web browser, Android often blanks the location before the page receives the file. If the tool says the location is blank, that copy is already clean, but the original in your gallery may still have it. Photos you send as files, by email or from a computer usually keep their location.
