Samsung patents phone trick to save battery by waking up only when needed

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Samsung has filed a patent for a method that helps mobile devices save power while waiting for messages. The device uses a low-power receiver to listen for a specific wake-up signal from the network. If the signal arrives, the phone’s main receiver turns on briefly to check for actual data; if not, it stays asleep.

Why it mattersThis technique could help smartphones last longer on a single charge by preventing the main processor from constantly scanning for network activity.

In the filing’s own words

Apparatuses and methods for triggering a main receiver (MR). A method of a user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes receiving a low-power wake up signal (LP-WUS) using a low-power receiver (LR); determining, based on the LP-WUS, an indication on whether to trigger a transceiver of the UE to receive a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH); and receiving, using the transceiver, the PDCCH based on the indication.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A user equipment (UE) comprising: at least one transceiver; at least one processor operably coupled to the at least one transceiver; and at least one memory, operably coupled to the at least one processor, for storing instructions executable by the at least one processor individually or in any combination to cause the UE to: receive, from a base station (BS), while the UE is in a radio resource control (RRC) idle state or an RRC inactive state, a wake-up-signal (WUS) for activating physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) monitoring, and perform the PDCCH monitoring according to a Type2-PDCCH common search space (CSS) set when a first time duration from a first time instance for the reception of the WUS to a second time instance for the PDCCH monitoring is not smaller than a specific value.
