Samsung patents wireless charger that shows where your phone is charging

Samsung describes a wireless charging pad that uses sensors to detect the position and direction of nearby devices. It connects to these devices to read their battery levels and displays this information on a screen built into the charger, mapping the data to the specific spot where the device is sitting.

Why it mattersThis could make it easier for users to see exactly how much power their devices are receiving without picking them up, especially if multiple gadgets are charging at once.

In the filing’s own words

A wireless power transmitting apparatus includes: at least one sensor for obtaining location information of at least one electronic device; a short-distance communication module for transmitting and receiving data including voltage or current information related to power of the at least one electronic device, to and from the at least one electronic device; a power transmission circuit configured to wirelessly supply power to the at least one electronic device; and a processor operably connected to the at least one sensor, the short-distance communication module, the power transmission circuit, and a display included in the wireless power transmitting apparatus or at least one electronic device, where the processor controls the display to output information about a power state of the at least one electronic device, on the basis of the location information of the at least one electronic device and the voltage or current information.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A wireless power transmitting apparatus for wirelessly supplying power to at least one electronic device positioned around the wireless power transmitting apparatus within an effective distance therefrom, regardless of a location of the at least one electronic device and a direction in which the at least one electronic device is placed, the wireless power transmitting apparatus comprising: at least one sensor; a short-distance communication module; at least one display: a power transmission circuit configured to transmit power to the at least one electronic device; at least one processor; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the wireless power transmitting apparatus to: obtain, through the at least one sensor, location information of the at least one electronic device including a direction of the at least one electronic device with respect to the wireless power transmitting apparatus, obtain, from the at least one electronic device which is wirelessly connected to the wireless power transmitting apparatus through the short-distance communication module, information about an amount of charge of a battery included in the at least one electronic device, and display, through the at least one display of the wireless power transmitting apparatus, at least one of information about the location information of the at least one electronic device or the amount of power charged in the at least one electronic device in an area of the at least one display of the wireless power transmitting apparatus corresponding to the direction of the at least one electronic device with respect to the wireless power transmitting apparatus.
