Microsoft patents method to skip incomplete chip data during network delays

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

This filing describes a system for tracking when performance data from computer chips is received. If data arrives late due to network congestion, the system marks that time period as incomplete. This ensures that only full sets of data are used to adjust how the chips run.

Why it mattersIt helps computer systems make better decisions about performance by ignoring data that might be missing due to connection issues.

In the filing’s own words

Decoupling of telemetry data production from network transmission during network congestion in a processor-based system is disclosed. The processor-based system includes processor cores (“cores”) that can each execute computer program instructions to perform tasks. To avoid the issue of analyzing telemetry data relating to the cores collected for a given epoch that may include missing and thus incomplete telemetry data, such as due to network congestion, a telemetry data system in the processor-based system is configured to track timing of receipt of telemetry data packets. If any telemetry data packets have not been timely received for an expected epoch, an epoch status for such epoch is recorded as having incomplete telemetry data for such epoch. This ensures complete telemetry data received for a given epoch is analyzed to more accurately control performance in the processor-based system.
