Samsung patents motor design that lets you swap bearings without removing the fan
Samsung has filed a patent for a motor design used in devices that move air, such as fans or vacuum cleaners. The motor body has a specific opening that allows a technician to access and replace the bearing while the fan blade is still covered by the housing.
In the filing’s own words
A motor comprising a stator, a bearing and a rotor, which electromagnetically interacts with the stator so as to rotate with respect to a rotary shaft. The motor includes an impeller to generate air flow, and includes a motor body for accommodating the stator, the rotor and the impeller. The motor body includes: a cover portion to cover the impeller while the rotor and the impeller are accommodated therein; and a support portion to support the rotor. The support portion includes: a bearing support portion to which the bearing is coupleable; and an opening enabling an access to the bearing support portion from outside of the support portion. While the impeller is covered by the cover portion, the bearing is couplable to the bearing support portion, and the opening is open along a direction intersecting a direction in which the rotary shaft extends, such that the bearing support is accessible.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A motor comprising: a stator; a rotor, including a bearing, configured to electromagnetically interact with the stator and rotate about a rotation axis; an impeller, to be coupled to one end of the rotor, configured to generate air flow by rotation; and a motor body configured to accommodate the stator, the rotor, and the impeller; wherein the motor body includes: a cover portion configured to cover the impeller while the rotor and the impeller are accommodated in the motor body; and a support portion configured to support the rotor, that rotates about the rotation axis, while the rotor and the impeller are accommodated in the motor body, wherein the support portion includes: a bearing support portion to which the bearing is coupleable; and an opening to allow the bearing support portion to be accessible from outside of the support portion while the cover portion covers the impeller.
