Microsoft patents auto-titles for emails that save battery life
Microsoft describes a system that automatically creates short, unique titles for emails or messages based on their content and related items. This helps software organize the messages without users needing to open or edit them manually.
In the filing’s own words
Technology is disclosed to programmatically determine and generate, for a target communication item, a contextual title that is relevant to a user, optimally formatted for ease of indexing and use by certain software applications, and easy for the user to consume. The contextual title is generated based on a comparison of the target communication item and related communication items. In this manner, the contextual title generated for the target communication item is different from existing contextual titles of the related communication items, yet related enough to associate the target communication item to certain related communication items. In this manner, contextual titles are generated without a user having to open or edit metadata associated with the communication item, thereby conserving bandwidth associated with a user engaging with high-bandwidth content from the target communication item and battery associated with consuming and editing the document.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method, comprising: accessing user-communication data, a plurality of communication items, and a target communication item; extracting, from the user-communication data, a user feature; determining, from the plurality of communication items and based at least on the user feature, a set of related communication items comprising at least one related communication item having a respective contextual title or a respective topic; generating a contextual title for the target communication item that is different from the respective contextual title or the respective topic, the contextual title being generated based on the target communication item and at least on one of: the user feature or the set of related communication items; and assigning the contextual title to a new metadata field associated with the target communication item.
