Microsoft patents system to blend multiple AI agents into one chat

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Microsoft has filed a patent for a method that lets a user talk to several different AI agents at once through a single chat window. The system uses a registry to pick the right agents for a task and manages their communication so the user sees one unified response rather than multiple separate ones.

Why it mattersThis could make complex AI tools feel simpler by hiding the coordination between different models behind a single, easy-to-use interface.

In the filing’s own words

This document relates to facilitating interactions between a user and multiple agents, such as agents that provide different generative machine learning capabilities. In certain disclosed implementations, user input is received and two or more agents are selected to perform a particular task for the user. Then, interactions with the agents are coordinated on behalf of the user based on agent definitions of the selected agents. A result of the particular task is received and provided to the user. For instance, the user input can be received via a chat interface that allows the user to conduct a single chat session that involves the particular task being performed by multiple agents, thus giving the user the appearance of interacting with a single agent.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising: providing an agent registry, the agent registry including agent definitions identifying respective characteristics of a plurality of agents; receiving user input from a user, the user input relating to a particular task requested by the user; responsive to receiving the user input, selecting two or more agents to perform the particular task based at least on respective agent definitions of the two or more selected agents in the agent registry; coordinating interactions with the two or more selected agents in accordance with the respective agent definitions, wherein the interactions relate to the particular task; receiving a result associated with the particular task from an individual selected agent; and responding to the user with the result.
