Samsung patents 3D grid system to manage phone movement in 5G/6G
Samsung has filed a patent for a method that divides a cell's 3D space into cubes to manage how devices move within a 5G or 6G network. The system uses location data to identify which cube a phone is in and applies specific mobility rules based on that position.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system to support a higher data transmission rate. Specifically, the present disclosure relates to a device for managing the mobility of a terminal on the basis of a detailed location, the device comprising: a transceiver; and a controller coupled with the transceiver, wherein the controller may be configured to: receive configuration information configuring at least one cube associated with a three-dimensional space within a cell; receive, from a location management function (LMF) node, auxiliary information for location measurement; transmit, to a terminal, the auxiliary information for location measurement; receive, from the terminal concealed information associated with the location measurement of the terminal; identify an identifier (ID) of a cube associated with the terminal on the basis of the concealed information associated with the location measurement of the terminal; determine whether it is allowed to apply a mobility management policy based on the identifier of the cube to the terminal; and transmit information about the mobility management policy to the terminal.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An access mobility and management function (AMF) node in a wireless communication system, the AMF node comprising: a transceiver; and a controller coupled with the transceiver, wherein the controller is configured to: receive configuration information configuring at least one cube associated with a three-dimensional space within a cell; receive, from a location management function (LMF) node, auxiliary information for location measurement; transmit, to a terminal, the auxiliary information for location measurement; receive, from the terminal, concealed information associated with location measurement of the terminal; identify a cube identifier (ID) associated with the terminal, based on the concealed information associated with location measurement of the terminal; determine whether a mobility management policy based on the cube ID is allowed to be applied to the terminal; and transmit, to the terminal, information on the mobility management policy.
