Samsung patents phone feature that switches networks to fix slow connections

Samsung has been granted a patent for a method where a phone monitors its own data usage to spot unusual drops in speed. If the phone detects a problem, it checks how busy the network is and automatically switches to a different type of connection or turns on a secure private network to fix the issue.

Why it mattersThis could help phones automatically recover from slow or unstable connections without the user having to manually restart their Wi-Fi or data.

In the filing’s own words

A UE includes a transceiver. The transceiver is configured to perform network activity for the UE. The UE further includes a processor operably coupled to the transceiver. The processor is configured to determine whether a change in network activity for the UE exceeds a metric, and upon determination that the metric is exceed, initiate an anomalous event detection process, and determine whether an anomalous event is detected. The processor is further configured to, upon detection of an anomalous event, determine a network load level, and modify, based on the determined network load level, a connection configuration of the UE.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A user equipment (UE) comprising: a transceiver configured to perform network activity for the UE; and a processor operably coupled to the transceiver, the processor configured to: determine whether a change in network activity for the UE exceeds a metric; upon a determination that the metric is exceeded: initiate an anomalous event detection process; and determine whether an anomalous event is detected; upon detection of an anomalous event, determine a network load level; and perform, based on the determined network load level, at least one of: switching a radio access technology (RAT) of the UE from a first RAT to a second RAT, or connecting the UE to a virtual private network (VPN).
