Samsung patents system to keep satellite calls connected as satellites move
Samsung describes a method for managing satellite communication cells in 5G or 6G networks. The system tracks the movement of satellites relative to the ground to automatically switch connections between ground base stations, ensuring that a user's device stays connected to the correct satellite cell.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure relates to a 5 th generation (5G) or 6 th generation (6G) communication system for supporting a data rate higher than a 4 th generation (4G) communication system such as long term evolution (LTE). The present disclosure provides a satellite communication cell management apparatus for managing satellite communication cells of at least one satellite, the satellite communication cell management apparatus including a transceiver, and at least one processor, wherein the at least one processor is configured to connect the satellite communication cells to base stations (BSs), and update connections between the satellite communication cells and the BSs, according to a relative movement of the at least one satellite with respect to the ground.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A satellite communication cell management apparatus for managing satellite communication cells of at least one satellite, the satellite communication cell management apparatus comprising: a transceiver; and at least one processor coupled with the transceiver and configured to: determine a first satellite communication cell corresponding to a ground location of a user equipment (UE) based on information on a satellite communication cell being last-connected with the UE, transmit a first paging request message for the first satellite communication cell, wherein the first paging request message is associated with a paging message for the UE, and if paging associated with the first satellite communication cell fails, transmit a second paging request message for a second satellite communication cell, wherein the second satellite communication cell is included in a registration area (RA) including the first satellite communication cell, and wherein the at least one processor is further configured to: connect a plurality of satellite communication cells in a management area of a base station (BS) center to a plurality of BSs managed by the BS center, and if the satellite communication cell exits from the management area of the BS center and the first satellite communication cell enters the management area of the BS center, according to a relative movement of at least one satellite with respect to a ground, release a connection between the satellite communication cell and a BS, among the BSs, and connect the first satellite communication cell to the BS.
