Samsung patents 5G method to prioritize data based on importance

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Samsung has filed a patent for a method in 5G or 6G networks that assigns an importance level to groups of data packets. The system sends a request with a specific value, ranging from 0 to 15, to help the network determine how to handle the connection.

Why it mattersThis filing describes a technical way to manage data traffic priorities, which could help ensure critical information gets through faster in future mobile networks.

In the filing’s own words

The present disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting higher data transmission rates. According to the present disclosure, provided is a method for supporting processing of a protocol data unit (PDU) session on the basis of importance of a PDU set in an application function (AF) of a wireless communication system, the method comprising the operations of: transmitting a request message relating to the PDU session to a first entity of a 5G system (5GS); and receiving a response message from the first entity in response to the request message, wherein the request message includes at least one parameter representing the importance of the PDU set, and a value of the importance is one integer determined in a range of 0 to 15 on the basis of a frame type of the PDU set.
