Samsung patents 5G method for managing network slice connections
Samsung has filed a patent application describing a method for 5G or 6G networks to manage data sessions across different network slices. The system allows a session management function to coordinate with policy controls by using both a primary and a secondary network slice identifier to ensure the correct data policies are applied.
In the filing’s own words
The present invention relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting higher data transmission rates. Provided is a method for supporting a session management function (SMF) of a communication network in the establishment of a protocol data unit (PDU) session on a network slice, the method comprising the steps of: receiving a PDU session request message, including a first network slice identifier and an additional network slice identifier, from an access and mobility management function (AMF), wherein the additional network slice identifier is replaced by the first network slice identifier; selecting a policy control function (PCF) for the first network slice identifier; transmitting, to the selected PCF, a policy creation request message including the first network slice identifier and the additional network slice identifier; and receiving, from the PCF, a message in response to the policy creation request message.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method for supporting establishment of a protocol data unit (PDU) session of a network slice by a session management function (SMF) in a communication network, the method comprising: receiving, from an access and mobility management function (AMF), a PDU session request message including a first network slice identifier and a second network slice identifier, wherein the second network slice identifier is an identifier of a network slice which is replaced by the first network slice identifier; selecting a policy control function (PCF); transmitting, to the selected PCF, a policy creation request message including the first network slice identifier and the second network slice identifier; and receiving, from the PCF, a response message including policy information, based on policy-related information for the first network slice identifier and policy-related information for the second network slice identifier, wherein the policy-related information for the first network slice identifier and the policy-related information for the second network slice identifier is associated with a unified data repository.
