Samsung patents Wi-Fi chip that talks on two frequencies at once
Samsung has filed a patent for an electronic device that can maintain a Wi-Fi connection using one standard while simultaneously connecting to another device using a different Wi-Fi standard. The system achieves this by using two different frequency bands, or radio channels, at the same time. This allows the device to handle multiple types of wireless traffic without stopping the first connection.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device includes: communication circuitry; at least one processor comprising processing circuitry; and memory storing instructions, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: perform, via the communication circuitry, WLAN communication of a first WLAN protocol with a first external electronic device through a first channel in a first frequency band; and based on performing the WLAN communication of the first WLAN protocol with the first external electronic device, perform, via the communication circuitry, WLAN communication of a second WLAN protocol with a second external electronic device through the first channel in the first frequency band and through a second channel in a second frequency band while the performing the WLAN communication of the first WLAN protocol with the first external electronic device, wherein the second frequency band is different from the first frequency band.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: communication circuitry; at least one processor comprising processing circuitry; and memory storing instructions, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: perform, via the communication circuitry, wireless local area network (WLAN) communication of a first WLAN protocol with a first external electronic device through a first channel in a first frequency band; and based on performing the WLAN communication of the first WLAN protocol with the first external electronic device, perform, via the communication circuitry, WLAN communication of a second WLAN protocol with a second external electronic device through the first channel in the first frequency band and through a second channel in a second frequency band while the performing the WLAN communication of the first WLAN protocol with the first external electronic device, wherein the second frequency band is different from the first frequency band.
