Samsung patents battery cover design with split front sections
Samsung has filed a patent for a battery assembly where a protective cover wraps the back and sides of a battery cell. The cover extends onto the front of the battery from both sides, leaving a gap between the two front sections.
In the filing’s own words
A battery includes a battery cell, and a cover. The cover includes a main cover portion to wrap a rear surface of the battery cell and including an inner surface facing the battery cell and an outer surface opposite the inner surface, a first cover portion extending from the main cover portion and to wrap a portion of a front surface of the battery cell from one-side edge of the battery cell, a second cover portion extending from the main cover portion and to wrap a portion of the front surface from an other-side edge of the battery cell. A first adhesive region of the first cover portion and a second adhesive region of the second cover portion are attached to a front surface of the battery cell. The first and second cover portions are spaced apart from each other when viewing a front surface of the battery.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device, comprising: a housing; and a battery within the housing and comprising a battery cell and a cover to wrap at least a portion of the battery cell, wherein the cover of the battery comprises: a main cover portion to wrap a rear surface of the battery cell and comprising an inner surface facing the battery cell and an outer surface opposite to the inner surface; a first cover portion, extending from the main cover portion, to wrap from a one-side of the battery cell to a portion of a front surface of the battery cell; and a second cover portion, extending from the main cover portion, to wrap from an other-side of the battery cell to a portion of the front surface of the battery cell, wherein a first adhesive region of the first cover portion and a second adhesive region of the second cover portion are on the front surface of the battery cell, and wherein the first cover portion and the second cover portion on the front surface are spaced apart when viewing a front surface of the battery.
