Microsoft patents chat cards that adapt to how well you understand a topic
This filing describes a system that turns documents into interactive chat cards to help users learn. It uses machine learning to score how well a user understands a topic and then changes the next question or prompt based on that score.
In the filing’s own words
Systems and methods for providing adaptive and conversational chat cards are provided herein. For example, a method may include receiving, from a client device, an indication to start a chat card exercise, determining, by a chat card engine, a source document based on the chat card exercise, and generating chat cards based on the source document. Each of the chat cards may correspond to a subtopic present in the source document. As such, the chat card engine may generate a first prompt based on a first subtopic and provide the first prompt within a first chat card to the client device. The chat card engine may receive a first query from the client device responsive to the first prompt and determine an understanding score. The chat card engine may then generate a second prompt based on the understanding score and provide the second prompt in the first chat card.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A system comprising: one or more computer readable storage media; one or more processors operatively coupled with the one or more computer readable storage media; and an application comprising program instructions stored on the one or more computer readable storage media that, when executed by the one or more processors, direct a computing system to at least: receive input content associated with a subject matter; generate, by a chat card engine comprising a machine learning model, a chat card comprising a prompt configured to elicit a response from a user based on the subject matter; provide, via a user interface, the chat card to a client device; receive, via the user interface, a user response associated with the chat card; determine, by the chat card engine using the machine learning model, an understanding score representing a level of user understanding based on (i) the user response and (ii) interaction data associated with the user; generate, by the chat card engine, an updated chat card based on the understanding score and the interaction data; adapt interaction with the user by modifying content of the updated chat card based on the understanding score; and provide, via the user interface, the updated chat card to the client device to continue an interactive session.
