Sony patents gaming network that auto-tunes signal strength to prevent lag
Sony has filed a patent for a system that monitors the wireless connection between gaming consoles and controllers. If the system predicts the connection might weaken, it automatically adjusts the signal strength of the devices to keep the network stable.
In the filing’s own words
A method, system, and non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for adjusting output power of hosts in a gaming device network that includes hosts and wireless peripheral devices. The gaming device receives status information indicative of network connectivity of the gaming device network based on data from at least (i) a subset of the hosts or (ii) a first wireless peripheral device of the wireless peripheral devices. The gaming device can monitor the network connectivity among the hosts and the wireless peripheral devices. Each wireless peripheral device is wirelessly connected to the gaming device. The gaming device determines an expected degradation in the network connectivity of the gaming device network based on the status information and generates a control output for adjusting an output power level of a host. The control output is transmitted to the host and the output power level of the host is adjusted using the control output.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method for adjusting output power of hosts in a gaming device network for a gaming environment, the gaming device network comprising multiple hosts communicatively coupled to each other and one or more wireless peripheral devices configured for wireless communication within the gaming device network, the method comprising: receiving, at an electronic gaming device and from one of the multiple hosts, status information indicative of network connectivity of the gaming device network based on data from at least (i) a subset of the multiple hosts or (ii) a first wireless peripheral device of the one or more wireless peripheral devices, wherein the electronic gaming device is configured to monitor the network connectivity among the multiple hosts and the one or more wireless peripheral devices, wherein each of the one or more wireless peripheral devices are wirelessly connected to the electronic gaming device; determining, by the electronic gaming device, an expected degradation in the network connectivity of the gaming device network based on the status information; in response to determining the expected degradation in the network connectivity and by the electronic gaming device, generating a control output for adjusting an output power level of at least one host of the multiple hosts; transmitting, from one of (i) a first host among the multiple hosts or (ii) the electronic gaming device and to the at least one host, the control output; and adjusting, by the at least one host and using the control output, the output power level of the at least one host.
