Samsung patents method to improve GPS accuracy using carrier phase data
Samsung has filed a patent application for a method that helps mobile devices determine their exact location in a wireless network. The device receives specific signals from the network, measures the phase of the carrier wave at a central frequency, and sends this data back to a location server for calculation.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure provides a method and an apparatus for supporting positioning in a wireless communication system. A user equipment (UE) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure may be configured to: receive information associated with carrier phase positioning (CPP) from a location management function (LMF) entity; receive a positioning reference signal (PRS) over a plurality of resources; measure a carrier phase on the basis of the center frequency of a frequency band associated with the plurality of resources; and transmit a measurement report on the carrier phase to the LMF entity.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system, the UE comprising: a transceiver; and a controller coupled to the transceiver, wherein the controller is configured to: receive, from a location management function (LMF) entity, information associated with a carrier phase positioning (CPP); receive positioning reference signals (PRSs) on multiple resources; measure a carrier phase, based on a center frequency of a frequency band associated with the multiple resources; and transmit, to the LMF entity, a measurement report of the carrier phase.
