Samsung patents method to save power in 5G and 6G cell towers

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Samsung has filed a patent for a way to manage power usage in wireless networks by letting different parts of a cell tower communicate to turn specific signals on or off. The system allows the network to enter a low-power state and wake up only when needed, reducing energy consumption during quiet periods.

Why it mattersThis could help mobile carriers reduce the electricity costs of running their massive networks of cell towers.

In the filing’s own words

The disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate. The present disclosure provides a node in a wireless communication system and a method performed by the same. A method performed by a first node in a wireless communication system according to embodiments of the present disclosure includes: receiving a second message from a second node, wherein the second message includes a network energy saving configuration; and transmitting a fifth message to a user equipment based on receiving the second message. The methods performed by a first node and/or a second node in a wireless communication system provided by the present disclosure can enable the network side to update configuration to achieve a purpose of energy saving by exchanging network energy saving configuration and/or network energy saving related information used for a request to activate a network in an energy saving state and/or deactivate a network in a non-energy saving state between nodes.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method performed by a first central unit (CU) of a base station in a wireless communication system, the method comprising: transmitting, to a distributed unit (DU) of the base station, a first message for a configuration update for the CU, the first message including a first list of at least one synchronization signal and physical broadcast channel block (SSB) to be activated; and receiving, from the DU of the base station, a second message for acknowledging the configuration update for the CU, the second message including a second list of at least one SSB activated based on the first message.
