Samsung patents faster cell switching for 5G and 6G networks
Samsung has filed a patent for a method that helps mobile devices switch between cell towers more quickly in 5G or 6G networks. The system pre-loads settings for nearby towers and uses a fast signal to trigger the switch, reducing the time the phone spends disconnected.
In the filing’s own words
The disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate. Disclosed is a method of performing a L1/L2 Triggered Mobility, LTM, cell switch in a telecommunication system, comprising the steps of: a User Equipment, UE, being configured with an LTM candidate cell configuration by receiving a reconfiguration message, via RRC, from a telecommunication network, the message including the LTM candidate cell configuration; applying the LTM candidate cell configuration for a target cell indicated in a received MAC Control Element, CE, upon receipt of an LTM triggering MAC CE from the network; performing LTM cell switch to the target cell upon the reception of LTM triggering MAC CE; and sending a reconfiguration complete message to the target cell during the LTM switch procedure.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system, the method comprising: receiving, from a base station, a radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration message including layer 1/layer 2 (L1/L2) triggered mobility (LTM) configuration information; transmitting, to the base station, a first RRC reconfiguration complete message, as a response to the RRC reconfiguration message; receiving, from the base station, a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) to trigger an LTM cell switch procedure to a target cell; performing the LTM cell switch procedure based on the MAC CE; and transmitting, to the target cell, a second RRC reconfiguration complete message for a completion of the LTM cell switch procedure.
