Samsung patents Wi-Fi priority for emergency devices

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Samsung has filed a patent for a method that allows emergency preparedness communication service (EPCS) devices to get priority access to a Wi-Fi network. The system works by having the device and the Wi-Fi router check if they both support this feature, and if so, the emergency device sends a request to jump ahead of other traffic on specific network links.

Why it mattersThis could help ensure that critical emergency communications, such as those from first responders or safety systems, are not delayed by regular internet traffic during a network congestion event.

In the filing’s own words

Methods and apparatuses for prioritization handling for emergency preparedness communication services (EPCS) operation are disclosed. A method for wireless communication performed by a non-access point (AP) device that comprises a station (STA) includes: forming a link with an AP; receiving information associated with emergency preparedness communication services (EPCS) from the AP; determining whether the STA and the AP support an EPCS operation; based on determining that the STA and the AP support the EPCS operation; determining whether the AP supports prioritization for EPCS devices; when the AP does not support prioritization for EPCS devices, performing the EPCS operation; and when the AP supports prioritization for EPCS devices, performing a prioritized EPCS operation, wherein the prioritized EPCS operation comprises prioritization among EPCS devices.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method performed by a non-access point (AP) device, the method comprising: transmitting to an AP device or receiving from the AP device an emergency preparedness communications service (EPCS) priority access enable request frame to enable EPCS priority access, wherein the EPCS priority access enable request frame includes an EPCS priority access multi-link element and wherein the EPCS priority access multi-link element includes parameters for the EPCS priority access; and performing a prioritized transmission according to the parameters for the EPCS priority access on one or more links between the non-AP device and the AP device.
