Samsung patents AI-driven handover prediction for mobile networks
Samsung describes a method where a phone uses local data to predict when it should switch to a different cell tower. The phone sends this prediction to the network, which then issues a command to switch connections based on that data.
In the filing’s own words
AI/ML configuration information transmitted from a base station to a UE includes one or more of enabling/disabling an AI/ML approach for operation(s) including handover prediction, AI/ML model(s) to be used for the operation(s), trained model parameters for the AI/ML model(s), and whether AI/MVL model parameters received from the UE at the base station will be used. Assistance information such as UE location, UE trajectory, or estimated DL channel status, inference results, or updated model parameters that is generated based on the configuration information may be transmitted from the UE to the base station. The UE may perform an inference regarding operations based on the configuration information and local data, and transmit an indication of the inference output to the base station. The UE may receive a handover command from the base station based on the inference output.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A user equipment (UE), comprising: a transceiver configured to receive, from a base station (BS), an indication for enabling an artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML)-based handover prediction functionality, transmit, to the BS, an applicability report indicating whether the AI/ML-based prediction functionality is supported by the UE; and a processor operatively coupled to the transceiver, the processor configured to determine an inference output of the AI/ML-based handover prediction functionality using local measurement data at the UE as an inference input, wherein the transceiver is further configured to transmit, to the BS, the inference output of the AI/ML-based handover prediction functionality, and receive, from the BS, a handover command to perform handover from a serving cell to a target cell, wherein the handover command is based on the inference output.
