Samsung patents faster error correction for wireless data
Samsung describes a method to speed up the decoding of polar codes, a type of error correction used in wireless communications. The system adjusts the amount of processing power used for each part of the data based on how reliable that part is, rather than treating all parts equally.
In the filing’s own words
An information set, a code length, and a set of entropy values for received polar code signals are obtained. A list size is adaptively changed based on an entropy-based metric for reducing a computational complexity of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding and for maintaining error-correcting performance. A respective entropy-based metric is determined for each index in the information set for a polar code. A list size smaller than a specified list size is assigned to one or more indices that have metrics less than a specified metric amount to produce a dynamic list size allocation. The error-correcting performance is measured based on simulating a block error rates (BLER) across a range of signal to noise ratios (SNRs), based on a SNR gap being within 0.05 decibels (dB).
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method comprising: receiving an information set, a code length, and a set of entropy values for received signals; adaptively changing a list size based on an entropy-based metric for reducing a computational complexity of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding and for maintaining error-correcting performance; determining, for a polar code using the set of entropy values, a respective entropy-based metric for each index in the information set; and assigning a list size smaller than a specified list size to one or more indices that have entropy-based metrics less than a specified entropy-based metric amount to produce a dynamic list size allocation.
