Samsung patents cooling system that turns heat bubbles into electricity

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Samsung has filed a patent for a power generation system designed to cool electronic components by immersing them in a liquid refrigerant. As the heat creates bubbles that rise from the component's surface, the system uses these bubbles to spin a small turbine, which then converts that motion into electrical energy.

Why it mattersThis approach is interesting because it attempts to solve two problems at once: removing excess heat from hardware and capturing a small amount of usable energy from the cooling process itself.

In the filing’s own words

A power generation system may be used to cool a heat dissipation device based on immersion in a refrigerant such that bubbles are generated at a heat dissipation device surface of the heat dissipation device in the refrigerant. The power generation system includes a turbine, a connector, and a converter. The turbine includes a turbine shaft and turbine blades connected thereto. The connector connects the turbine and the heat dissipation device to position the turbine shaft to extend parallel to gravity and position the turbine in the refrigerant above at least a portion of the heat dissipation device surface in a vertical direction, to configure the turbine to rotate based on an action of rising pressure exerted by the bubbles rising from the heat dissipation device surface to impinge on the turbine blades. The converter is configured to convert kinetic energy of the turbine into electrical energy.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A power generation system comprising: a container with a refrigerant and a heat dissipation device; a turbine including a turbine shaft rotatable about a central longitudinal axis; and a connector configured to connect the turbine and the heat dissipation device, wherein the connector comprises: a first connector having a first side and a second side; and a weight positioned at the second side of the first connector, the weight configured to exert a downward gravitational force, wherein the weight is configured to automatically align the turbine shaft to extend parallel to a direction of gravity by the downward gravitational force exerted by the weight within the refrigerant.
