Samsung patents secure method for loading 5G profiles onto new phones
Samsung describes a way for phone makers to securely load 5G network profiles onto new devices before they are sold. The system uses temporary encryption keys to protect the data as it moves from the manufacturer to the phone's internal chip.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate. A method performed by a base station in a wireless communication system may comprise a control signal processing step comprising the steps of receiving a first control signal being transmitted from the base station, processing the received first control signal, and transmitting, to the base station, a second control signal generated on the basis of the processing.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by an in-factory profile provisioning (IFPP) server in a communication system, the method comprising: obtaining, from a manufacturer server of an embedded universal integrated circuit card (eUICC), encryption key information on each of a plurality of eUICCs; transmitting, to a profile provisioning server, a request message for requesting a bound profile package (BPP) for at least one eUICC among the plurality of eUICCs based on the encryption key information,, the request message including encryption key-related information on each of the at least one eUICC; and receiving, from the profile provisioning server, a response message including the BPP based on the request message, wherein the encryption key-related information includes information associated with an algorithm used for generating a temporary key for each of the at least one eUICC, and wherein the BPP transferred from the IFPP server via an application of a corresponding terminal is installed in an eUICC of the corresponding terminal.
