Microsoft patents chip cooling that targets hot spots with fluid
Microsoft describes a cooling system for electronic chips that uses a tiny network of fluid channels. It measures the chip's temperature, finds the hottest area, and opens specific valves to direct cooling fluid directly over that spot.
In the filing’s own words
A thermal management device includes a microfluidic volume having a first peripheral side and a second peripheral side and including at least one thermal element, a first port to the microfluidic volume, a second port from the microfluidic volume, an inlet valve at the first port to the microfluidic volume, an outlet valve at the second port, and a valve piezoelectric element in mechanical communication with a portion of at least one of the inlet valve and the outlet valve to move at least the portion of the at least one of the inlet valve and the outlet valve and selectively allow fluid flow through the microfluidic volume.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method of thermal management of an electronic component, the method comprising: providing an inlet manifold and an outlet manifold having a plurality of ports at a periphery of a microfluidic volume in thermal communication with a surface of an electronic component; measuring a plurality of temperatures on the surface of the electronic component; determining a hot spot of a higher temperature relative to another area of the surface of the electronic component; selecting at least a first port and a second port of the plurality of ports that produce a fluid path therebetween that crosses the hot spot; opening the first port of the manifold to allow fluid flow of a working fluid into the microfluidic volume; and opening the second port of the manifold to selectively flow the working fluid in the fluid path across the hot spot from the first port to the second port.
