Samsung patents altitude-based cell measurement for 5G/6G networks
Samsung has filed a patent for a method where mobile devices use altitude data to decide when to report network signal strength to a base station. The device receives specific altitude thresholds from the network and only sends measurement results if its current height triggers a report, rather than sending data continuously.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate. According to one embodiment, a method performed by means of a terminal of a wireless communication system may enmprise the steps of: acquiring, from a base station, measurement configuration information including altitude-related infermation, measuring at least one cell with respect to at least one altitude on the basis of the altitude-related information, and reporting a measurement result for the at least one cell to the base station on the basis of the altitude-related information, wherein the altitude-related information includes at least ene altitude threshold value for determning whether to trigger a report for the at least ene measurement result.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a terminal of a wireless communication system, comprising: acquiring, from a base station, measurement configuration information including altitude-related information; performing measurement on at least one cell for at least one altitude based on the altitude-related information; and reporting a measurement result for the at least one cell to the base station based on the altitude-related information, wherein the altitude-related information includes at least one altitude threshold value for determining whether to trigger the reporting of the at least one measurement result.
