Samsung patents phone design with three stacked wireless charging coils
Samsung describes an electronic device with a coil assembly placed near the back of the housing. The design uses three ring-shaped coils stacked on top of each other, where the inner coil sends power to other devices, the middle coil receives power, and the outer coil can do both.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device is provided. The electronic device includes a housing including a rear plate forming a rear surface facing a first direction of the electronic device, a coil assembly disposed adjacent to the rear plate in a second direction opposite to the first direction, and configured to transmit or receive power, wherein the coil assembly includes a first coil configured to transmit power to an external electronic device and having a ring shape when viewed from the second direction, a second coil configured to receive power from a wireless power transmission device outside of the electronic device, the second coil having a ring shape surrounding an outer peripheral surface of the first coil when viewed from the second direction, a third coil configured to transmit power to the external electronic device or receive power from the wireless power transmission device and having a ring shape surrounding an outer peripheral surface of the second coil when viewed from the second direction, and wherein the first coil and the second coil are electrically connected in parallel, and the third coil is electrically connected in series with the first coil and the second coil.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: a housing including a rear plate forming a rear surface facing a first direction of the electronic device; and a coil assembly disposed adjacent to the rear plate in a second direction opposite to the first direction, and configured to transmit or receive power, wherein the coil assembly comprises: a first coil configured to transmit power to an external electronic device and having a ring shape when viewed from the second direction, a second coil configured to receive power from a wireless power transmission device outside of the electronic device, the second coil having a ring shape surrounding an outer peripheral surface of the first coil when viewed from the second direction, and a third coil configured to transmit power to the external electronic device or receive power from the wireless power transmission device, the third coil having a ring shape surrounding an outer peripheral surface of the second coil when viewed from the second direction, and wherein the first coil and the second coil are electrically connected in parallel, and the third coil is electrically connected in series with the first coil and the second coil.
