Sony patents method to send audio to idle game controllers

Sony has filed a patent for a system that checks which connected game controllers are not being used. It then sends audio signals to those idle controllers, which contain vibration components, allowing the system to output sound through them.

Why it mattersThis could allow players to hear game sounds from multiple controllers in a room, even if only one person is actively playing.

In the filing’s own words

Disclosed herein is a method of outputting audio signals from a computing system to multiple peripheral devices, the method comprising: detecting a plurality of peripheral devices in a powered-on state, wherein each of the peripheral devices are connected to the computing system and respectively comprise a vibration generating component; identifying which of the peripheral devices are in an idle state; and sending audio signals to the identified peripheral devices.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)
