Sony patents game controller tech that adjusts force feedback based on connection quality

Sony has filed a patent for a system that monitors the quality of your internet connection while playing cloud-based games. If the connection is weak, the system adjusts the physical force feedback in your controller to prevent the experience from feeling broken or laggy.

Why it mattersThis could make cloud gaming feel more responsive and reliable by ensuring the physical controller reacts smoothly even when the internet connection is unstable.

In the filing’s own words

The present technology relates to an information processing apparatus, an information processing method, and a program capable of suppressing deterioration in quality of user experience due to quality of a transmission path for transmitting information corresponding to displacement information regardless of a type of processing performed on the basis of the displacement information. The transmission control unit of the client apparatus performs control such that displacement information indicating displacement of an operation button that is displaced in accordance with a user's operation and presents a force sensation to the user is transmitted to a server 13 via the transmission path. The control unit controls presentation of a force sensation by the operation button on the basis of the quality of the transmission path. The present technology can be applied to, for example, a game streaming system or the like including a client apparatus, a controller apparatus connected to the client apparatus in a wired or wireless manner, and a server connected to the client apparatus via the Internet or the like.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An information processing apparatus comprising: a transmission control unit that performs control such that displacement information that indicates displacement of an operation unit that is displaced according to an operation of a user and presents a force sensation to the user is transmitted to another information processing apparatus via a first transmission path; and a control unit that controls presentation of the force sensation by the operation unit on a basis of quality of the first transmission path.
