Samsung patents phone feature to auto-fetch missed satellite messages
Samsung has filed a patent for a method that allows electronic devices to automatically recover messages missed while connected to a satellite network. When the device detects that its satellite connection has dropped and then re-established, it sends a signal to the satellite to request any data that was not delivered during the outage.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device is provided. The electronic device comprises communication circuitry; at least one processor including processing circuitry; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: after a satellite for a non-terrestrial network (NTN) service is connected, identify that the NTN service is lost, after the NTN service is identified as lost, identify that the NTN service is recovered, based on identification that the NTN service is recovered, automatically transmit, to the satellite, via the communication circuitry, a signal for causing transmission of one or more messages which failed to be transmitted to the electronic device during a time period between a first time point at which the NTN service is lost and a second time point at which the NTN service is recovered, and receive, from the satellite, via the communication circuitry, the one or more messages.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: communication circuitry; at least one processor including processing circuitry; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: after a satellite for a non-terrestrial network (NTN) service is connected, identify that the NTN service is lost, after the NTN service is identified as lost, identify that the NTN service is recovered, based on identification that the NTN service is recovered, automatically transmit, to the satellite, via the communication circuitry, a signal for causing transmission of one or more messages which failed to be transmitted to the electronic device during a time period between a first time point at which the NTN service is lost and a second time point at which the NTN service is recovered, and receive, from the satellite, via the communication circuitry, the one or more messages.
