Samsung patents wireless charging method using dual-band communication

Samsung describes an electronic device that uses two different communication frequencies to set up a wireless charging connection. The device first identifies itself on a lower-power channel, then switches to a second channel to negotiate and transfer power data from an external charger.

Why it mattersThis filing outlines a specific technical method for coordinating wireless power transfer, which could improve the reliability or efficiency of how devices connect to charging pads.

In the filing’s own words

Disclosed is an electronic device comprising a power reception coil, a first communication circuit supporting first communication in a first frequency band, a second communication circuit supporting second communication in a second frequency band, and a control circuit, wherein the control circuit is configured to: receive a first signal including a first identification information from an external electronic device using the first communication; detect a second signal of the external electronic device including a second identification information using the second communication; when the first and second identification information match, transmit a third signal to the external electronic device using the first communication, the third signal requests a connection to the external electronic device; connect to the external electronic device via the second communication in a response to the request; and transmit or receive data used to receive power to and from the external electronic device using the second communication.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An electronic device comprising: a power reception coil; a first communication circuit configured to support a first communication in a first frequency band; a second communication circuit configured to support a second communication in a second frequency band that is different from the first frequency band; and a control circuit electrically connected to the power reception coil, the first communication circuit, and the second communication circuit, wherein the control circuit is configured to: connect to an external electronic device via the first communication based on the first communication circuit; transmit a first signal including a designated identification information to the external electronic device by using the first communication based on the first communication circuit; transmit a second signal by using the second communication based on the second communication circuit, the second signal broadcasting the designated identification information; receive a third signal, from the external electronic device having detected the second signal, by using the first communication based on the first communication circuit, the third signal requesting connection of the second communication with the electronic device; in response to the requesting connection, connect to the external electronic device via the second communication based on the second communication circuit; and transmit or receive data to or from the external electronic device by using the second communication based on the second communication circuit, the data being used to receive power from the external electronic device based on the power reception coil.
