Sony patents game controller system that predicts player moves over two channels
Sony describes a method for sending game controller data to a server using two separate communication paths. One path sends the immediate button press, while the other sends a prediction of what the player intends to do next. The server combines these signals to adjust the character's movement in the game before the full data arrives.
In the filing’s own words
Described herein are techniques for transmitting state data between a controller and another electronic device. In embodiments, such techniques may comprise receiving, at a user device, input that relates to a first action to be performed by an avatar; providing, to a second electronic device, a first set of state data generated from the received input over a first communication channel; and determining a user intent that relates to a second action to be performed by the avatar. Based on the user intent, a second set of state data can be generated that is different from the first set of state data and includes less than all available state data. The second set of state data can be provided to the second device over a second communication channel, causing the avatar to perform a modified action.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method comprising: receiving, from a controller device via a first communication channel, a first set of state data representing a first move request for an avatar; receiving, from the controller device via a second communication channel, a second set of state data representing a predicted user intent; determining an adjusted action for the avatar by modifying the first move request based on the second set of state data; determining that the adjusted action is a valid move by reconciling the adjusted action against an authoritative game state; and in response to determining that the adjusted action is a valid move, executing the adjusted action within a virtual environment.
