Samsung patents SSD access control for shared storage
Samsung describes a method for managing how multiple users or software environments share a single solid-state drive. The system checks the drive's capabilities, negotiates specific access levels with each user, and then sets up a virtual environment to enforce those limits.
In the filing’s own words
Provided are systems, methods, and apparatuses for multitenancy SSD access control. In one or more examples, the systems, devices, and methods include determining capabilities of a storage device for supporting multitenancy based on a physical function message from the storage device, identifying a tenant of a host, the host being communicatively connected with the storage device, negotiating an access contract between the tenant and the storage device, where the negotiating includes sending an access descriptor of the tenant to the storage device, the access descriptor indicating a requested level of access to the storage device, receiving, from the storage device, an access grant based on the negotiating, the access grant including an access allocation for the tenant based on the access descriptor, and enabling the tenant to access the storage device based on configuring the tenant with a virtualized computing environment in accordance with the access allocation.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method of multitenancy access control, the method comprising: determining, by a host, capabilities of a storage device for supporting multitenancy based on a physical function message from the storage device; identifying, by the host, a tenant of the host, the host being communicatively connected with the storage device; sending, by the host, an access descriptor of the tenant to the storage device, the access descriptor indicating a requested level of access to the storage device; receiving, by the host from the storage device, an access grant based on the sending, the access grant including an access allocation for the tenant based on the access descriptor; and configuring, by the host, the tenant to access the storage device based on configuring the tenant with a virtualized computing environment in accordance with the access allocation.
