Sony patents mixing game and phone video on one screen
Sony has been granted a patent for a method where a gaming console receives data from a user's mobile phone to create a combined video display. The system allows the console to switch between showing only the game or a composite image that blends the game footage with visuals from the phone.
In the filing’s own words
A data processing apparatus includes first image processing circuitry to generate first video images for an interactive content for display to a user, communication circuitry to receive, via a network, portable device data indicative of a state of a software application executed on a portable device associated with the user, second image processing circuitry to generate one or more second video images for display in dependence on the portable device data, control circuitry to set a control value in response to a user input by the user, and output circuitry to selectively output one of a first video image and a composite video image in dependence on the control value, where the composite video image comprises a portion comprising at least some of the first video image and another portion comprising at least some of a second video image.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method comprising: providing, for display to a user and by a gaming console, video images that are associated with interactive content; receiving, by the gaming console and from a mobile phone that is associated with the user, data on the mobile phone of the user; determining, by the gaming console, that the user has designated a control value that is associated with providing composite video images for display; and in response to determining that the user has designated the control value that is associated with providing the composite video images for display: generating, by the gaming console, the composite video images based at least on the received data from the mobile phone of the user, and providing, for display to the user and by the gaming console, the composite video images.
