Samsung patents method for phones to report signal quality without standard feedback
This patent describes a way for mobile devices to send detailed statistics about how well they are receiving data from a cell tower. Instead of sending immediate yes-or-no answers for every packet of data, the phone counts successful and failed downloads over a set period and sends a summary report to the network.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure provides a method for transmitting uplink control information, a method for receiving uplink control information, a method for configuring a downlink HARQ feedback function, a terminal and a base station. The method for transmitting uplink control information comprises: transmitting uplink control information to a base station, wherein the uplink control information comprises at least one of decoding statistical information for downlink transmission, suggestion information for downlink scheduling, or channel quality related information.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method of a terminal for transmitting uplink control information, the method comprising: receiving, from a base station via radio resource control (RRC) signaling, configuration information on a length of a time window for statistically generating the uplink control information; based on the configuration information on the length of the time window, accumulating a number of downlink transmissions received within the time window, wherein a plurality of downlink transmissions corresponding to a same transport block (TB) are counted as one downlink transmission; in response to determining that the accumulated number of the downlink transmissions reaches a preconfigured threshold (N total) generating decoding statistical information for the downlink transmission, wherein the decoding statistical information is generated every time the accumulated number of the downlink transmissions reaches the Ntotal, and wherein the decoding statistical information for the downlink transmission includes at least one of: a decoding success ratio, a decoding failure ratio, cumulative times of decoding successes, or cumulative times of decoding failures of the downlink transmission within the time window; and based on that a downlink hybrid automatic repeat and request (HARQ) feedback function is disabled, transmitting, to the base station, the uplink control information including the decoding statistical information for the downlink transmissions.
