Samsung patents method for phones to use GPS data to fix signal timing
Samsung has been granted a patent for a method that allows mobile devices to use Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data, such as GPS, to improve 5G and 6G connections. The device measures its position and calculates small errors in time and frequency to adjust its signal before sending data to the cell tower.
In the filing’s own words
The disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate. The present disclosure provides a method performed by a user equipment (UE) for acquiring global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning information is provided. The method includes performing GNSS measurement to acquire the GNSS positioning information, and estimating a time-frequency offset based on the GNSS positioning information for pre-compensation of uplink transmission.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE) for acquiring global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning information, the method comprising: receiving, from a base station, a first indication based on a first subframe, wherein the first indication indicates that the UE is triggered to perform GNSS measurement; identifying that the UE is triggered to perform the GNSS measurement based on the first indication; performing the GNSS measurement to acquire the GNSS positioning information based on a GNSS measurement window; and estimating at least one of a time offset or a frequency offset based on the GNSS positioning information for pre-compensation of uplink transmission, wherein a start location of the GNSS measurement window corresponds to a second subframe that is after a predefined interval from the first subframe.
