Samsung patents phone feature to block unsupported satellite data requests
This patent describes a method for electronic devices to connect to both ground-based cellular networks and satellite networks. The device checks a stored list to see which services a specific satellite network supports before sending data requests. It prevents the phone from asking for services the satellite cannot handle, such as voice calls if only data is available.
In the filing’s own words
In an electronic device and an operation method of an electronic device according to various embodiments, the electronic device may include: a communication circuit configured to support cellular communication through a terrestrial network and a non-terrestrial network, a memory configured to store mapping data in which identification information of the non-terrestrial network and services supported by the non-terrestrial network are mapped, and a communication processor, wherein the communication processor may be configured to: identify, while connecting to a network through a node, whether the network including the node is the non-terrestrial network, based on system information received from the node, identify, based on the network being the non-terrestrial network, services supported by the network, based on the mapping data, and prohibit transmission of a request message for establishment of a packet data unit (PDU) session for a service, which is not supported by the network, to the network.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device comprising: a communication circuit configured to support cellular communication through a terrestrial network and a non-terrestrial network; a memory configured to store mapping data in which identification information of the non-terrestrial network and services supported by the non-terrestrial network are mapped; and a processor, wherein the processor is configured to: identify, based on the mapping data, a service supported by the non-terrestrial network to be connected, when performing a connection procedure to the non-terrestrial network; and prohibit transmission of a request message for connection establishment for a service, which is not supported by the non-terrestrial network, to the non-terrestrial network.
