Samsung patents method to switch devices between 4G and 5G networks
This patent describes a way for a device to figure out which network it should be using when a connection attempt is rejected. If the device is told it is in the wrong network, it automatically redirects itself to the correct one, such as moving from a 5G core to a 4G core or vice versa.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure relates to a communication method and system for converging a 5th-Generation (5G) communication system for supporting higher data rates beyond a 4th-Generation (4G) system with a technology for Internet of Things (IoT). The present disclosure may be applied to intelligent services based on the 5G communication technology and the IoT-related technology, such as smart home, smart building, smart city, smart car, connected car, health care, digital education, smart retail, security and safety services. Disclosed is a method of redirecting a User Equipment, UE, from a serving network to a target network, whereby the serving network rejects a service request message.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE), in a communication system, the method comprising: transmitting a service request message; in case that the service request message is transmitted to an access and mobility management function (AMF): receiving, from the AMF, a first service reject message including a fifth generation (5G) mobility management (5GMM) cause value of #31, and identifying that redirection to an evolved packet core (EPC) is required based on the 5GMM cause value; and in case that the service request message is transmitted to a mobility management entity (MME): receiving, from the MME, a second service reject message including an EPC mobility management (EMM) cause value of #31, and identifying that redirection to a 5G core network (5GCN) is required based on the EMM cause value.
