Samsung patents phone method for sending beam quality reports to cell towers
This patent describes a way for a phone to measure the quality of its connection to a cell tower and decide when to send a report back. The phone uses a pre-assigned data channel to transmit this information, selecting the right channel size based on how much data it needs to send.
In the filing’s own words
Methods and apparatuses for user equipment (UE) initiated reporting in a wireless communication system. A method of operating a UE includes receiving first information related to resources for a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH); receiving second information related to (i) beam measurement resources and (ii) a beam report configuration; and receiving third information related to a condition to transmit a beam report; measuring the beam measurement resources. The method further comprises determining, based on the measurement and the condition, whether to transmit the beam report; in response to determining to transmit the beam report, determining the beam report based on the measurement; and transmitting, via a resource from the resources for the PUSCH, the beam report. The resource for the PUSCH is a Type 1 configured grant PUSCH resource.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A user equipment (UE), comprising: a transceiver configured to: receive first information related to resources for a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH), wherein the first information indicates a plurality of Type 1 configured grant PUSCH resource configurations, receive second information related to (i) beam measurement resources and (ii) a beam report configuration, and receive third information related to a condition to transmit a beam report; and a processor operably coupled to the transceiver, the processor configured to: measure the beam measurement resources, determine, based on the measurement and the condition, whether to transmit the beam report, in response to determining to transmit the beam report, determine the beam report based on the measurement, and select one of the plurality of Type 1 configured grant PUSCH resource configurations based on at least an amount of information in the beam report or contents of the beam report, wherein the transceiver is further configured to transmit, via a resource from the resources for the PUSCH, the beam report, wherein the resource for the PUSCH is a Type 1 configured grant PUSCH resource corresponding to the selected Type 1 configured grant PUSCH resource configuration, and wherein the beam report is included in uplink control information (UCI) carried in the Type 1 configured grant PUSCH resource.
