Samsung patents phone frame design that fits antennas in thin metal edges

The filing describes a smartphone housing where the metal frame has specific thin and thick sections to create space for internal antennas. By using non-conductive gaps between metal parts, the design allows antenna components to sit close to the edge without interfering with the frame's own signal capabilities.

Why it mattersThis design helps manufacturers fit more wireless components into slim phone frames without sacrificing signal strength or battery space.

In the filing’s own words

An electronic device is provided. The electronic device includes a housing including a first surface facing a front side of the electronic device, a second surface opposite to the first surface, and a peripheral part surrounding a space between the first surface and the second surface and including a conductive portion and a first non-conductive portion contacted with an end portion of the conductive portion, and an antenna module including a substrate, in the housing, disposed in a direction parallel to a portion of the peripheral part and a plurality of antenna elements disposed on a surface of the substrate and spaced apart from each other in the direction, wherein, when the peripheral part is viewed vertically, the peripheral part includes a first region overlapping the antenna module and a second region including the conductive portion having a thickness greater than a thickness of the conductive portion included in the first region, and wherein, when the peripheral part is viewed vertically, the first non-conductive portion overlaps one of the plurality of antenna elements in the first region.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An electronic device comprising: a housing including a peripheral part forming a lateral side of the electronic device, the peripheral part including: a first conductive portion including a first section and a second section thinner than the first section of the first conductive portion, wherein the first conductive portion is configured to function as an antenna, a second conductive portion including a third section and a fourth section, the third section being closer to the second section of the first conductive portion than to the first section of the first conductive portion, wherein the third section of the second conductive portion is thinner than the fourth section of the second conductive portion, and a first non-conductive portion between the second section and the third section such that the first conductive portion is electrically isolated from the second conductive portion; and an antenna module distinct from the antenna including the first conductive portion, the antenna module including: a substrate, in the housing, disposed in a direction parallel to a portion of the peripheral part, and a plurality of antenna elements disposed on a surface of the substrate and spaced apart from each other in the direction, wherein the antenna module is disposed to overlap a notch portion of the peripheral part and the first non-conductive portion, and wherein the notch portion is formed by a difference in thickness between the first and second sections of the first conductive portion and a difference in thickness between the third and fourth sections of the second conductive portion.
