Microsoft patents AI tool that turns text prompts into sticker packs

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Microsoft describes a system where users type a theme and number of stickers to create a custom set. The software sends this request to an AI image generator and then uses specific computer vision steps to cut the images into individual, clean stickers.

Why it mattersThis could make it easier for people to create personalized digital stickers for chat apps without needing graphic design skills.

In the filing’s own words

A data processing system includes a processor; and a memory in communication with the processor, the memory storing executable instructions that, when executed by the processor alone or in combination with other processors, cause the data processing system to perform functions of: receiving user input in text form describing a sticker pack a user wants to generate, a user interface prompting the user to enter the user input; generating a prompt using the user input and a prompt template that is specific to sticker pack generation; submitting the prompt to a generative artificial intelligence (GAI) to generate an image for the sticker pack; and segmenting and filtering the image from the GAI with a post-processing system to produce a completed pack of stickers usable by the user.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A data processing system comprising: a processor; and a memory in communication with the processor, the memory comprising executable instructions that, when executed by the processor alone or in combination with other processors, cause the data processing system to perform functions of: receiving, via a user interface, user input in text form describing a sticker pack a user wants to generate, wherein: the user input includes a theme and a desired number of unique electronic stickers, and the sticker pack comprises a plurality of unique electronic stickers that share the theme; generating a prompt using a prompt template that includes instructions to generate the sticker pack according to the desired number of unique electronic stickers and the theme to be shared among the desired number of unique electronic stickers; submitting the prompt to a generative artificial intelligence (GAI) to generate an image for the sticker pack; receiving the image for the sticker pack generated by the GAI; processing, by intelligent binary thresholding, the image to produce a segmented image; processing, by hierarchical contouring, the segmented image to produce a contoured image; processing, by non-leaf node contour filtering, the contoured image to produce a filtered contoured image; processing, with cut-off filtering, the filtered contoured image to remove superfluous objects from the filtered contoured image; processing, with transparency and area-based filtering, the filtered contoured image to filter objects from the filtered contoured image based on transparency levels and areas; processing, with edge smoothing with a Gaussian blur, the filtered contoured image to obtain edge smoothing of the objects in the filtered contoured image to produce a set of segmented stickers; and displaying the set of segmented stickers on the user interface.
