Samsung patents phone fix for network version mismatches
Samsung has been granted a patent for a method that helps phones connect to cell networks when the phone and the tower are running different software versions. The phone sends its capabilities to the network, and if the network cuts the connection immediately, the phone assumes a version mismatch, switches to a different technical standard, and tries connecting again.
In the filing’s own words
An electronic device includes a communication circuit, a processor, and memory storing instructions. The instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the electronic device to receive, a user equipment (UE) capability enquiry (UCE) message requesting to transfer capability information of the electronic device from a network, transmit a UE capability information (UCI) message including the capability information of the electronic device to the network, in response to the UCI message, identify whether a message is received from the network within a set time, identify whether the message is a radio resource control (RRC) connection release message indicating to release an RRC connection, and based on identifying that the message is the RRC connection release message, identify that a version number of a technical specification (TS) release operated in the electronic device is different from a version number of a TS release operated in the network.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device, comprising: a communication circuit; at least one processor; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the electronic device to: receive, a user equipment (UE) capability enquiry (UCE) message requesting to transfer capability information of the electronic device from a network via the communication circuit, based on receiving the UCE message, transmit a UE capability information (UCI) message including the capability information of the electronic device based on a first technical specification (TS) release of a first version number to the network via the communication circuit, identify whether a message is received after the transmission of the UCI message, from the network via the communication circuit, within a set time, based on identifying that the message is received after the transmission of the UCI message within the set time, identify whether the message received after the transmission of the UCI message within the set time is a radio resource control (RRC) connection release message indicating to release an RRC connection, based on identifying that the message received after the transmission of the UCI message within the set time is the RRC connection release message, change a TS release from the first TS release to a second TS release of a second version number different from the first version number, and establish another RRC connection with the network via the communication circuit based on the second TS release.
