Samsung patents storage trick to match data size with memory cell types

Samsung describes a storage device where a controller temporarily holds data in an internal buffer before moving it to a reserved area of the memory. The system adjusts how it groups this data to match the specific size requirements of different memory cell types before finally writing it to the main user area.

Why it mattersThis filing details a specific method for managing data flow in nonvolatile memory, which could help optimize how storage devices handle different types of memory cells.

In the filing’s own words

A storage device, including a nonvolatile memory device including a plurality of memory cells forming a user area and a reserved area; and a controller configured to perform a write operation on at least one write unit included in the plurality of memory cells, and to perform an erase operation on at least one erase unit included in the plurality of memory cells, wherein the controller includes an internal buffer, wherein the controller is configured to: perform a backup operation by writing first data stored in the internal buffer in a backup erase unit included in the reserved area, and after performing the backup operation adjust a buffering unit of the internal buffer to correspond to a cell type of the backup erase unit.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A storage device comprising: a nonvolatile memory device comprising a plurality of memory cells forming a user area and a reserved area; and a controller configured to perform a write operation on at least one write unit included in the plurality of memory cells, and to perform an erase operation on at least one erase unit included in the plurality of memory cells, wherein the controller comprises an internal buffer, wherein the controller is configured to: receive a first write request including first data to be written into the user area from an external host device, store the first data in the internal buffer, perform a first backup operation by moving the first data from the internal buffer to a backup erase unit included in the reserved area, wherein the backup erase unit corresponds to a first cell type, after performing the first backup operation, adjust the internal buffer to correspond to the first cell type, receive a second write request including second data to be written into the user area from the external host device, store the second data in the internal buffer, perform a second backup operation by moving the second data from the internal buffer to the backup erase unit, and based on determining that a combined page size of the first data and the second data stored in the backup erase unit is equal to a target page size corresponding to a second cell type, migrate the first data and the second data from the backup erase unit to a target erase unit included in the user area, wherein the target erase unit corresponds to the second cell type.
