Sony patents game streaming that splits video across 5G network types

Sony describes a system for streaming multiplayer games by sending different video feeds over separate parts of a 5G network. One feed uses a high-priority channel for standard data, while a second feed uses a different, lower-priority channel for specific communication needs.

Why it mattersThis approach could help maintain smooth gameplay on mobile devices by managing network traffic more efficiently during online sessions.

In the filing’s own words

[Object] To provide an information processing apparatus and an information processing system that make it possible to play a game smoothly while using a mobile communication system. [Solving Means] An information processing apparatus according to the present technology includes a control section and a communication section. The control section performs rendering to generate a first video obtained when a virtual space to which a plurality of users is capable of getting connected is viewed from a first point of view; assigns, to the first video, an identifier indicating that a first slice that is given a high communication priority is used for communication; performs rendering to generate a second video obtained when the virtual space is viewed from a second point of view that is different from the first point of view; and assigns, to the second video, an identifier indicating that a second slice that is given a lower communication priority than the first slice is used for communication. The communication section transmits the first video and the second video through a communication network.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An information processing apparatus, comprising: a control section configured to: generate a virtual space based on data of a game; generate a first video based on the virtual space that is viewed from a first point of view, wherein a plurality of users is connected to the virtual space via a plurality of terminals; assign a first identifier to the first video, wherein the first identifier indicates that a first slice is associated with communication of the first video, the first slice corresponds to a first communication network, and the first communication network is a logical network for enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB); generate a second video based on the virtual space that is viewed from a second point of view that is different from the first point of view; and assign a second identifier to the second video, wherein each of the first identifier and the second identifier is Single-Network Slice Selection Assistance Information (S-NSSAI), the second identifier indicates that a second slice is associated with communication of the second video, the second slice corresponds to a second communication network different from the first communication network, the second communication network is a logical network for Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC), a communication priority of the second slice is lower than a communication priority of the first slice, the first slice and the second slice are virtual networks in a physical network, the physical network includes the first communication network and the second communication network, and the first slice is independent from the second slice; and a communication section configured to: transmit, to a first terminal of the plurality of terminals, the first video through the first communication network; and transmit, to a second terminal of the plurality of terminals, the second video through the second communication network.
