Samsung patents method to keep 5G backup connections ready during outages
This patent describes a way for 5G phones to manage backup connections from a second tower without using full power. The phone stays in a low-power state but still checks the signal strength of the backup tower. If the backup signal fails, the phone immediately alerts the main tower to fix the connection.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure relates to: a communication technique for merging IoT technology with a 5G communication system for supporting a data transmission rate higher than that of a 4G system; and a system therefor. The present disclosure relates to a method performed by a terminal in a wireless communication system, and may comprise the steps of: receiving a deactivation command regarding a secondary cell group (SCG) from a first base station related to a master cell group (MCG); performing measurement on at least one beam related to the SCG, in a deactivated state regarding the SCG; and performing a random access with a second base station related to the SCG, on the basis of a random access preamble related to a downlink beam, when beam failure is detected on the basis of the measurement.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system, the method comprising: receiving, from a first base station associated with a master cell group (MCG), a first radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration message including configuration information for configuring a secondary cell group (SCG) associated with a second base station; receiving, from the first base station, a second RRC message for deactivating the SCG; based on the second RRC message for deactivating the SCG, performing an SCG deactivation; detecting a beam failure on a primary secondary cell (PSCell) of the SCG while the SCG is deactivated; and transmitting, to the first base station, a beam failure recovery (BFR) media access control (MAC) control element (CE) for informing the detection of the beam failure on the PSCell of the SCG, wherein the BFR MAC CE includes information on a candidate beam for the PSCell, and wherein the UE keeps running a time alignment timer (TAT) of a primary timing advance group (PTAG) that the PSCell belongs to while the SCG is deactivated.
