Samsung patents method to fix 5G signal drops across multiple carriers
This patent describes a way for phones to monitor their 5G connection across different frequency bands using a single set of control signals. It allows the device to detect if the signal on a secondary band is failing by checking reference signals originally meant for the primary band.
In the filing’s own words
Methods and apparatuses for beam failure recovery with cross-carrier beam management. A method for operating a user equipment (UE) includes receiving a carrier indicator field in a configuration for a first control resource set (CORESET) in a serving carrier of the UE and receiving first information indicating beam failure detection (BFD) reference signals (RSs) for the serving carrier. The carrier indicator field indicates another carrier that is different from the serving carrier. The first CORESET is with a transmission configuration indication (TCI) state associated with both the serving carrier and the other carrier. The method further includes determining, based on the carrier indicator field and the first information, one or more BFD RSs from the BFD RSs for the serving carrier to monitor the other carrier and determining, based on monitoring the one or more BFD RSs for the other carrier, whether to declare a beam failure for the other carrier.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A user equipment (UE), comprising: a transceiver configured to receive: a carrier indicator field in a configuration for a first control resource set (CORESET) in a serving carrier of the UE, wherein: the carrier indicator field indicates another carrier that is different from the serving carrier, and the first CORESET corresponds to a transmission configuration indication (TCI) state that is associated with both the serving carrier and the other carrier, and first information indicating beam failure detection (BFD) reference signals (RSs) for the serving carrier; and a processor operably coupled with the transceiver, the processor configured to: determine, based on the carrier indicator field and the first information, one or more BFD RSs from the BFD RSs for the serving carrier to monitor the other carrier, and determine, based on monitoring the one or more BFD RSs for the other carrier, whether to declare a beam failure for the other carrier.
