Samsung patents 5G method to swap network slices for new apps
Samsung has been granted a patent for a method that helps 5G and 6G devices manage their network connections. When a new app requires a specific type of network service, the device automatically requests that service from the network. If the device is already using the maximum number of allowed services, it drops the least important one to make room for the new app.
In the filing’s own words
The disclosure relates to a fifth generation (5G) or sixth generation (6G) communication system for supporting a higher data transfer rate. A method performed by a user equipment in a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes executing an application in the user equipment, identifying a user equipment route selection policy (URSP) rule mapped to the application, based on configuration information on the application, identifying a single-network slice selection assistance information (S-NSSAI) mapped to the application, based on the URSP rule mapped to the application, and transmitting a message requesting registration of the S-NSSAI mapped to the application to a core network via a base station. The S-NSSAI may correspond to a network slice selection assistance information (NSSAI) not allowed by the core network to be registered among NSSAIs configured for the user equipment.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system, the method comprising: executing a first application of the UE; identifying a UE route selection policy (URSP) rule mapped with the first application, based on configuration information on the first application; identifying a first single-network slice selection assistance information (S-NSSAI) mapped with the first application, based on the URSP rule mapped with the first application, wherein the first S-NSSAI is not registered for the UE; in case that a number of S-NSSAIs registered for the UE corresponds to a maximum number, identifying a second S-NSSAI mapped with a second application having a lowest priority among the S-NSSAIs registered for the UE; and transmitting, to a core network via a base station, a message for requesting registration of the first S-NSSAI mapped with the first application, wherein the message includes an S-NSSAI list including the first S-NSSAI in replacement of the second S-NSSAI registered for the UE.
