Samsung patents method for adjusting phone location tracking based on area
Samsung has been granted a patent for a method that helps 5G phones determine their location more efficiently. The system sends the phone a specific area and a preferred way to find its position, such as using satellite signals or cell tower timing. If the phone is inside that area, it uses the assigned method to calculate its location and sends the result back to the network.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure relates to a wireless communication system and, more specifically, to a method and a device for providing a location information service in a cellular wireless communication system (5G system). According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a method for measuring the location in an UE in a mobile communication system may comprise the steps of: receiving, from a location management function (LMF) device in the mobile communication system, UE positioning performance information including a surrounding target area and an UE positioning method; receiving system information from a base station in the mobile communication system; identifying whether the UE is included in the surrounding target area on the basis of the received positioning performance information and system information; determining a positioning method on the basis of the received UE positioning performance information when the UE is located within the surrounding target area; performing positioning of the UE by using the determined positioning method; and transmitting a result of the positioning to the LMF device.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE) in a communication system, the method comprising: receiving, from a location management function (LMF) device of the communication system, a message including information of a target area for tracking a location of the UE and at least one positioning method; identifying whether the UE is inside the target area received from the LMF device; and in case that the UE is inside the target area: identifying the location of the UE, by using a specific positioning method assigned for the target area from among the at least one positioning method; and transmitting, to the LMF device, a report message including the location of the UE, wherein the information of the target area is determined, by a gateway mobile location center (GMLC) of the communication system, based on converting a positioning service area into a list of one or more tracking areas, and the target area is mapped the list of the one or more tracking areas, wherein the identifying of whether the UE is inside the target area includes identifying whether the UE is inside the one or more tracking areas, wherein the message further includes a level of positioning accuracy, and wherein the specific positioning method assigned for the target area corresponding to at least one of an assisted global navigation satellite system (GNSS), or an observed time difference of arrival (OTDOA).
